Time-limited rest at rest areas

From July 1st, 2018, it will be illegal for trucks to park for more than 25 hours at one of the 90 state highway rest areas.

The Government, together with the Danish People's Party, has decided this as a follow-up to the finance bill agreement and on the basis of the Danish Road Directorate's investigations.

At the same time, as of the 1st of January 2019, the level of fines for illegal parking will be raised from DKK 510 to DKK 2000, as well as on the access and exit ramps from DKK 1000 to DKK 3000.

The initiative aims to create orderly conditions and free up capacity in the rest areas along the motorway network.
In addition, it should improve road safety on the entry and exit ramps at the rest areas, where trucks are currently parked illegally.

It will still be possible for truck drivers to take a reduced weekly rest of 24 hours, while a regular weekly rest must be taken at home, cf. the driving and rest time regulations.

Separate funds will be set aside for the Danish Road Directorate to enforce the parking restriction, for which they have taken over responsibility from the police.
It will still be the police who are responsible for controlling parking in entrances and exits, as well as enforcing the ban on 45-hour rest in the truck (regular weekly rest).

The 25-hour rule is expected to take effect on July the 1st, 2018, while the penalty level for illegal parking is expected to take effect on January the 1st, 2019.
